Probing Jamaica's Auditor General
WATCHING THE WATCHDOGS
As early as next week, the spotlight is expected to turn on the Auditor General’s Department in Jamaica.
The Pamela Monroe Ellis-led entity, which has been widely credited for highlighting public sector corruption, will now face questions from the parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) about infractions of its own.
But it’s not just the department’s breaches that should be probed.
Independent auditors consulted by 18º North agree that the PAC should also ask about its Special Audit of Caribbean Maritime University last year and whether the department was partial when it came to reporting on Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Dr. Grace McLean.
On Sunday, as part of our Watching the Watchdogs series, 18º North will release our special report, which examines the Auditor General’s coverage of Dr. McLean, and what it says about the office described by Mrs. Monroe Ellis as being able to operate “relatively independently” as opposed to being fully independent.
